Music for January

Tuesday, January 2
7–9 PM

With windchills dipping into the minus 40s, here some music to remind that summer is just a few short months away. We have one new song and a few more from our song book.

And here are a few warm weather/summer songs we’ve played before:

Warm thoughts to chase away the wind chill.

Winter is in full effect so let’s escape to a warmer season. Send me your favourite tropical or summery song suggestions.

Happy holidays to you and yours! I can’t wait to see you all in the new year.

Happy strumming.

Santa and Mrs. Claus playing ukuleleThe holiday season is upon us. Let’s add a couple of new Christmas songs to the repertoire so we can be ready for any eggnog-fueled sing-a-longs!

We also have lots of other Christmas songs in our collection to get through.

Ho ho ho!

November’s circle

Tuesday, November 7
7–9 PM
Sawchyn Guitars, 2132 Dewdney Avenue, Regina

There’s no theme this month so I’m going through a few of the suggestions that people have sent in. We played When I’m Sixty-Four a couple of months ago, but I’ve cleaned it up a bit and thought it should become part of our “official” songbook.

Next month we’ll dive into some Christmas music. We already have a few in the collection, but please send suggestions for new additions.

See you next week and Happy Halloween!

Music for October and an amazing ukulele workshop!

Next circle: Tuesday, October 3
7–9 PM
Sawchyn Guitars, 2132 Dewdney Avenue, Regina, Sask.

Kendra has some big news about an event in October, but first here’s the music for the next circle. This month’s theme is country so we’ve got five new songs to get your twang on.

We can also pull out a few other songs from or collection, like Act Naturally and Your Cheatin’ Heart.

James Hill playing ukulele against a rusty car

OK, so on to Kendra’s big news. Ukulele master James Hill is going to be in Regina in October and has offered to put on a workshop at the store! James is an amazing teacher and headlines ukulele festivals all over the world. This is a fantastic opportunity that can’t be missed.

James Hill Ukulele Workshop

Time: 7 PM
Cost: $30
Skill level: Beginner and intermediate
Location: Sawchyn Guitars, 2132 Dewdney Avenue

September’s circle: Disney songs

Tuesday, September 5
7–9 PM
Sawchyn Guitars, 2132 Dewdney Avenue, Regina

Mickey Mouse playing ukuleleIt’s back to school time and back to the shop.

Come join us for your favourite Disney tunes. Bonus points to anyone with Mickey Mouse ears.

Remember, next month’s theme is country music. It’s never too soon to send in suggestions.

August’s circle: On the deck

August 1, 2017
7–9 PM
Laura and Murray’s deck (email or check Facebook for directions)

It’s our second summer getaway! Laura and Murray have volunteered to host the August circle.

There’s no new music this month; we’re just going to play favourites from our songbook.

We’ll be back to the shop in September. The theme is Disney, so send me your favourite tunes from the house the mouse built.

October’s theme is country. You can send those song suggestions, too.

See you next week!

Music for July

Next circle: Tuesday, July 4
7-9 PM
5967 Mallard Way, Regina, Sask.

As promised – although later than I was intending – here’s the new music for July’s all-Canadian circle.

And of course:

Plus, we have more Canadian music already in our songbook:

I’ll print out booklets with all of the music as we won’t be able to use the projector.

See you at my place on Tuesday!

Happy 150th, Canada!

July 4, 2017
7–9 PM
5967 Mallard Way, Regina, Sask.

It’s Canada’s 150th anniversary! To celebrate, July’s circle will be as Canadian as maple syrup and pond hockey.

I’m still putting the finishing touches on the song list, but I’ve received suggestions for Neil Young, Barenaked Ladies, Anne Murray, Bryan Adams and more. I’ll send the music out later this week and post it to the website and Facebook.

It’s also going to be this year’s first circle away from the shop. Everyone is invited to my backyard (north of A.E. Wilson Park) so be sure to check the address above. Laura and Murray have kindly offered their deck for the circle in August.

Please bring a lawn chair and music stand if you have one. I’ll print out the music since it will be too bright for the projector.

If the weather turns, we have plenty of room in my basement.

Quick note: We do have a poodle who loves attention from strangers. I’ll keep her inside if there are people who aren’t comfortable around dogs.

June’s circle and Cathedral Festival request

Next circle: Tuesday, June 6
7-9 PM
Sawchyn Guitars, 2132 Dewdney Avenue, Regina, Sask.

They’re gonna put me in the movies …

This month’s theme is soundtracks, but before we get to the music, I’m still looking for people who can help out with a request.

At May’s circle, I asked if anyone was able to help a long-time Cathedral neighbourhood couple celebrate their wedding at the Cathedral Village Arts Festival on Saturday, May 27. We will gather at 11 AM and the wedding parade kicks off at 11:30. We’ll play a quick song for the couple and then march through the street fair, led by the Pile of Bones Brass Band. Please let me know if you can join us!

I’ll have more details (like the meeting location) after a pre-event meeting on Tuesday. I’ll send a followup to those who can join in.

OK, back to the movie soundtracks. It’s hard to imagine any of these movies without these iconic songs.

(A couple of these have ugly chords. I may try to transpose them to make them a bit easier.)

If there’s time, we have more movie music in our collection, like Stuck in the Middle With You from Reservoir Dogs and A Hard Day’s Night, the title track from the Beatles’ first feature.
