November’s circle: Peace and Love

November 1
7 PM to 9 PM
Sawchyn Guitars, 2132 Dewdney Avenue

The news has been filled with anger and division so let’s remedy that with a night of peace and love. I’ve pulled together a few favourites from the ’60s, as suggested by our members.

OK, Bobby McFerrin isn’t from the ’60s, but it’s a good one for the repertoire.

The next circle is the day after Halloween, so feel free to dress up!

October’s circle: Kenny, Johnny, June and the Hip

Tuesday, October 4
7-9 PM
Sawchyn Guitars, 2132 Dewdney Avenue

I’ve got three new songs for October:

I was asked for some Tragically Hip and Wheat Kings is one of their best. It also tells a story well known to Saskatchewanians.

How have we not done The Gambler yet?! Note that the original has a key change at the fourth verse, but we’ll take the easy way out and skip that for now. If you’re feeling adventurous and want to put it back in, take it up two half steps to E, A, B7 and B.

Jackson is best known as a duet by Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash. I’ve marked it where it switches from one to the other.

September’s circle: Back to the shop

Tuesday, September 6, 2016
7–9pm
Sawchyn Guitars, 2132 Dewdney Avenue, Regina, SK

I hope everyone is having a great summer! After two circles in the open air, the next circle is back at the shop.

I’ve prepared two new songs. Please send suggestions for others.

Grace VanderWaal is becoming a household name after her appearance on America’s Got Talent. She’s only 12 and is making her mark.

Twenty One Pilots is another group bring ukulele to the mainstream. I’ve had a couple of people request this song. The video has a bit more blood than most ukulele songs, but it’s certainly memorable.

Can’t wait to see you all again. Happy strumming!

Tuesday Night Ukes: June 2016

Tuesday Night Ukes
7–9PM, Tuesday, June 7
Sawchyn Guitars, 2132 Dewdney Avenue

No theme this month:

Tonight, You Belong to Me has become a ukulele classic and I’ve had a few people ask for it. Search for it on YouTube and you will find dozens of versions from movies, celebrities, rock stars and four year olds.

PDFs: New music for June

  • GCEA (soprano, concert, tenor)
  • DGBE (baritone)

Don’t forget about the Manitoba Hal blues ukulele workshop on July 24. Seats are limited and are available at Sawchyn Guitars or at the next circle. Only $35 to learn from one of the best!

The following circle will be July 5 in A.E. Wilson park behind my house (or in my house, if the weather doesn’t cooperate) and then over to Laura’s for August. Details to follow.

Happy strumming!

Tuesday Night Ukes, May 2016: Totally rad ’80s night!

Tuesday, May 3
7 to 9 PM
Sawchyn Guitars, 2132 Dewdney Avenue, Regina, SK

Calling all gnarly dudes and mall chicks. It’s time to break out your leg warmers, pastel suits, acid wash jeans and shoulder pads. Well, maybe not all at once.

I’ve prepared a few new songs and we’ll dip into our catalogue for some other ’80s hits.

The new stuff:

OK, technically Maybe Tomorrow was written at the end of 1979, but show didn’t become a hit until the ’80s.

And from our song book:

See you all in May. It will be totally rad!

Music for March

No theme this month, just five requests.

Tuesday, March 1
7 PM
Sawchyn Guitars, 2132 Dewdney Avenue, Regina

PDFs

Here’s all the new music in a single PDF for those printing or loading on to a tablet.

Next month is our second anniversary! We won’t have any new music, but anyone brave enough to make their way to the front of the room is invited to play for the group. After that, we can all shout out songs and then perhaps some socializing across the road.

Music for February

Tuesday, February 2
7pm
Sawchyn Guitars, 2132 Dewdney Avenue, Regina

No theme this month, but I’m working my way through song requests. If you have a song (or theme) you’d like to play, send it my way.

Music for January: Elvis lives!

Next circle: Tuesday, January 5
7PM
Sawchyn Guitars (2132 Dewdney Avenue)

Hello all! I hope everyone has been able to spend time with friends and family this holiday season. Was Santa good to those who still believe? Any new strings, tuners or ukuleles under the tree?

Music

Todd reminded me that January 8 is Elvis Presley’s birthday, so this month we’ll add a few more songs from the King to our repertoire.

PDFs

There was a problem with Burning Love in the PDFs. If’ you’ve already printed them out, here’s the correct version.

The song books below have been fixed.

Ukuleles seem to be a popular Christmas present so we may have a few more people than usual. There may also be a few new members from Gary’s and Don’s ukulele classes and our appearance on CBC could also give us a bump. In order to get an idea of how many chairs to put out, please let me know either by email, a comment on this article on the website or add yourself to the Facebook event. There’s no need to reply in multiple places, though, as I don’t want to accidentally count you twice.

Happy New Year and I’ll see you on Tuesday!

A couple of extra songs for New Year’s Eve

At the last circle we played all Christmas songs, but here are two bonus songs just for New Year’s Eve. You can’t ring in the new year without Robbie Burn’s ode to friends near and far, Auld Lang Syne. The other is a bit more challenging than most of our repertoire, but it’s seen a resurgence in popularity thanks to a celebrity YouTube post a few years ago.

These aren’t for the next circle; I just thought a few of you might like the challenge.

Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt released the video above four years ago and it quickly became one of the most requested songs on all the ukulele sites. Ukulele Hunt did the best job with identifying the chords.

One warning for those playing along: the video is flipped horizontally. That’s why all the chords are backwards!

Music for December

Tuesday, December 1
7 PM
Sawchyn Guitars, 2132 Dewdney Avenue

We have two new songs for December plus a handful of Christmas songs.

At the last circle I said I had prepared John Lennon’s anti-war anthem, Imagine. With the horrific events in Paris and elsewhere, it seems more appropriate than ever.

Music

I’ve also added all our previous holiday songs to our song book to make them easier to find.
