April 2017: Our third birthday!

April 11, 2017 (second Tuesday!)
7–9 PM
Sawchyn Guitars, 2132 Dewdney Avenue, Regina, SK

In 2014, a few strangers brought their ukuleles to Sawchyn Guitars for our first circle. Three years later, the group has grown and friendships have been built.

Like our other anniversary circles, I’m turning the floor over to you. Anyone who wants to is invited to play a solo or lead the group in a song. I’ll have a sign up sheet at the counter; just add your name if you want to take the stage.

After the performances, we’ll have a few snacks and drinks and then play through our favourites from the catalogue.

I’ll also collect dues for 2017. It’s only $10 for the year, which gets you a nifty name card and the happiness that comes with helping to keep the circle going 🙂  Also, Sawchyn occasionally offers deals for card holders, so there’s something in it for you, too.

Most importantly: NOTE THE DATE! I’m going to be out of town so we’ve had to move April’s circle to the second Tuesday.

Happy anniversary to everyone! I’ll see you on April 11.

Happy St. Paddy’s, March 2017

Next circle: March 7, 2017
7–9 PM
Sawchyn Guitars, 2132 Dewdney Avenue

This month’s song selections should help us throw a pretty good ceilidh!

There are many version of Red is the Rose on YouTube. While most are in D, I like the one above because it’s in C, which is a bit better suited to the ukulele.

There are also many different lyrics for Whiskey in the Jar. The one on here match the version by The Irish Rovers.

Don’t forget! Next month we have to move back a week to April 11. It’s also our third anniversary and your chance to perform for the rest of the group!

Almost spring

Next circle: March 7, 2017 (oops, not 2013 like the email said)
7–9 PM
Sawchyn Guitars, 2132 Dewdney Avenue, Regina, Sask.

We’re edging ever closer to spring! I even saw a bit of green (ish) grass! That must mean that St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner so let’s celebrate with a couple of themes: Fifty Shades of Green and drinking songs!

Two songs have been suggested so far—Green, Green Grass of Home and Time to Switch to Whiskey—but more suggestions are welcome! Get them in before the end of February and I’ll add them to the list.

See you in March!

February 7: Love Songs

Tuesday, February 7
7-9 PM
Sawchyn Guitars, 2132 Dewdney Avenue

This is as close as we’ll get to Valentine’s Day, so let’s celebrate love.

(I’ve got a couple of tweaks to make on Rhythm of Love. The chords are there, but I’m trying to make the timing a bit easier.)

Thank you to everyone who suggested love (or anti-love) songs. I’ve got a few more stashed away for later circles.

Ho Ho Ho! December’s circle is here

Next circle: Tuesday, December 6
7-9 PM
Sawchyn Guitars, 2132 Dewdney Avenue, Regina, Sask.

Though the weather outside has actually been pretty nice, Christmas is just around the corner. We’ve got a few new holiday tunes lined up to add to our existing song book.

OK, Spirits isn’t exactly a holiday song, but it was suggested before our ’60s night and we can pretend it’s about the Christmas spirit.

Hope to see you all there!

November’s circle: Peace and Love

November 1
7 PM to 9 PM
Sawchyn Guitars, 2132 Dewdney Avenue

The news has been filled with anger and division so let’s remedy that with a night of peace and love. I’ve pulled together a few favourites from the ’60s, as suggested by our members.

OK, Bobby McFerrin isn’t from the ’60s, but it’s a good one for the repertoire.

The next circle is the day after Halloween, so feel free to dress up!

October’s circle: Kenny, Johnny, June and the Hip

Tuesday, October 4
7-9 PM
Sawchyn Guitars, 2132 Dewdney Avenue

I’ve got three new songs for October:

I was asked for some Tragically Hip and Wheat Kings is one of their best. It also tells a story well known to Saskatchewanians.

How have we not done The Gambler yet?! Note that the original has a key change at the fourth verse, but we’ll take the easy way out and skip that for now. If you’re feeling adventurous and want to put it back in, take it up two half steps to E, A, B7 and B.

Jackson is best known as a duet by Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash. I’ve marked it where it switches from one to the other.

September’s circle: Back to the shop

Tuesday, September 6, 2016
7–9pm
Sawchyn Guitars, 2132 Dewdney Avenue, Regina, SK

I hope everyone is having a great summer! After two circles in the open air, the next circle is back at the shop.

I’ve prepared two new songs. Please send suggestions for others.

Grace VanderWaal is becoming a household name after her appearance on America’s Got Talent. She’s only 12 and is making her mark.

Twenty One Pilots is another group bring ukulele to the mainstream. I’ve had a couple of people request this song. The video has a bit more blood than most ukulele songs, but it’s certainly memorable.

Can’t wait to see you all again. Happy strumming!

August 2 ukulele circle

First off, thank you to everyone who was at the circle this week. I had a great time and loved being able to open my home to you.

Next month’s circle is at Laura’s.

Tuesday, August 2
7–9 PM

There will be no new music, so we’ll play through our songbook. Laura’s deck is a bit more shady, so I’ll try to get the projector working. Those of you who have printed songbooks or tablets are encouraged to bring them just in case. It’s not a bad idea to throw a lawn chair in your car, too.

Also, Laura has invited everyone to her 14th Annual 50th Birthday Party! It’s this Saturday, July 9 at 7 PM. Bring an instrument and snacks. Bushwakker beer will be provided; bring your own refreshments if you prefer something else.

One last reminder: the blues workshop with Manitoba Hal is Sunday, July 24! Details are on the Queen City Ukes site.
