Tuesday Night Ukes, November 3

Yay! We’re finally back to our regularly scheduled night and location.

Tuesday, November 3
7 pm
Sawchyn Guitars, 2132 Dewdney Avenue, Regina

I’ve prepared three songs:  a Joni Mitchell classic, a song that helped bring ukulele into the mainstream and the title track from the Beatles’ first movie.

Tuesday Night Ukes: September 1

Summer is winding down, but there’s still time for one more circle away from our home at Sawchyn Guitars. A huge thank you to Laura, who has invited us to play on her deck (or inside if the weather takes a turn)!

Here’s all the music in one big PDF for those who want to print out their own binder or save it to a tablet or computer.

I’ve updated the music page on the website. It now lists all the music we’ve played at the monthly circles so you don’t have to search through all 664 songs in the complete library. For those who might be just starting out, the songs with easier chords are marked with an asterisk (*).

Tuesday Night Ukes: August 4

Aloha! It’s time for another circle!

Tuesday, August 4
7 PM
Connaught Library’s back yard, 3435 13th Avenue at Elphinstone Street

We’re going to be outside again so bring your lawn chairs or blankets. If the weather doesn’t cooperate, the library has room for us. Three cheers to Kaiti for the location!

We had two song requests; one country, the other jazz:

The ukulele version of Toes is in the same key as our music; just C, F, G and G7.

I linked to Nat King Cole’s version of Don’t Get Around Much, Anymore but there are lots more. The music is the same as the version in the 365 book. There are a couple of new chords, but your fingers won’t end up in knots.

Ukuleles in the Park! Next ukulele circle, July 7

It’s summer! Let’s play outside!

Tuesday, July 7
7 PM
Rotary Park, Regina Avenue and Angus Street (one block west of Albert)

For July’s circle, we’ll meet at Rotary Park. It’s just north of Regina Avenue and west of the Victoria Bridge. Please bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on. There is parking on the street and along the alley that takes you to the park.

My parents house backs onto the park and they have offered us a roof in case it rains.

We’ve got three new songs lined up:

You can download all the music in a single PDF:

I don’t know if there will be any way to use the projector outside, so bring your binders.

Just like last month, we’ll also play a bunch of tunes from our existing catalogue. Feel free to shout songs out at the circle, or for those too polite to shout, email me or add a comment on the website or Facebook!

Next ukulele circle, June 2

Tuesday, June 2
7 PM
Sawchyn Guitars, 2132 Dewdney Avenue

We’re going to start collecting fee this month. It’s $10 for the year for individuals and $20 for families.

Update: I’m so sorry. I originally said $15 for families. It should have been $20. My apologies.

I’ve prepared four new songs for this month; two easier ones for the first half and two slightly trickier ones for the second half. Telia did such a great job with “Count On Me” in May that I wanted to add it to our repertoire.

We’ll also play a bunch of tunes from our existing catalogue. If you want to make a request, email me or add it in the comment on Facebook or on the website. You can shout songs out at the circle, but songs requested in advance will jump to the head of the queue!

If anyone wants to do a solo or group song after the break, let me know. I’ll also leave a sign up sheet on the counter.

If the stars align, I should have a projector to display the music! I haven’t tested it yet, but if this works, we should be able to do away with the song books! We can also add new music on the fly, so if anyone would like to lead the group in a song, we can pull it up for everyone to see without having to print 40 pages.

Tuesday Night Ukes, April 7

It’s time for our 12th Tuesday Night Ukulele circle. I can’t believe how quickly the last year has flown by. In May we’re going to celebrate our first anniversary, but for now, let’s do what we do best: sing a few songs with friends and have some laughs!

7 pm Tuesday, April 7 at Sawchyn Guitars (2132 Dewdney Avenue, Regina)

Here are the songs for Tuesday night. Thanks, everyone, for the suggestions and thanks to Gary and Laura for The Hukilau Song and Swinging on a Star.

All the songs in a single PDF:

I’ve included YouTube links so you can hear what they sound like and play along. Most are in the same key but if not, I’ve indicated the capo position.

Remember, next month I’m turning the tables and asking group members to try leading a song or performing a solo or group piece. Performing is a great way to push yourself to improve and where better to dip your toe in the water than among friends!

Tuesday Night Ukes, March 3

The Queen City Ukes next circle is 7pm Tuesday, March 3, at Sawchyn Guitars (2132 Dewdney Avenue).

We’re going to finish off the music from November’s “Ukulele Right Hand” workshop.

The single file with all of March’s music will be ready soon, but in the mean time, here are the links to the individual songs.

If there’s time, I also want to touch on James Hill’s “Chord Twins” workshop from earlier this month:

  • Sway
  • St. James’ Infirmary

For those who ordered the Daily Ukulele, the books are in! Don’t forget to bring $35.

February’s ukulele circle, Feb. 3

Old valentine card with a little boy with a ukuleleTuesday, February 3
7 PM
Sawchyn Guitars, 2132 Dewdney Avenue

We’re going to continue the introduction to strumming patterns.

All the music in one file: (GCEA) (DGBE)

Songs include:

That’s a lot, so if we don’t get through them all, we’ll finish them off in March. Joel also taught some finger-picking techniques. We’ll look at those in March, too.

Happy new year! The next ukulele circle is January 6

Happy new year, everyone! It’s time to work off all that turkey with another ukulele circle.

Tuesday, January 6
7 PM
Sawchyn Guitars, 2132 Dewdney Avenue

It’s almost 2015 and that means it’s time to work on those ukulele resolutions!

We’ve started to build up a pretty good collection of chords over this first year. For 2015, my resolution is to concentrate more on what my right hand is doing. For the next few circles, I’m going to work through the strumming patterns that Joel introduced us to at the his “Ukulele Right Hand” workshop in November.

We’ll spend an hour or so introducing some patterns and try them out on some new songs. The songs have been added below and on the music page.

See you in the new year!
